LONDON (AFP) — The star of Oscar-winning hit film “Slumdog Millionaire” is in talks to appear on the TV gameshow in which the rags-to-riches movie is based on, a spokeswoman said Thursday. Dev Patel, the 18-year-old British actor who plays Jamal, an orphan from the Mumbai slums, in the film could appear on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” in Britain with the movie’s director Danny Boyle. “We know that they’re interested, we’re in talks but nothing is confirmed,” Melissa Goss, a spokeswoman for Two Way Traffic, the firm which owns the show’s format rights, told AFP, confirming a report in the Sun newspaper. “We think it’s a great idea and it’s something we have been thinking about.” If all sides reach agreement, a special charity edition of the show could go out on Britain’s privately funded ITV channel later this year, she added. Railway Children, a charity which works with street children whose plight is highlighted in the film, said it was in contact with Boyle’s sister about the director and Patel doing a charity edition of the show to benefit its work. “We’re in talks with ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?’ and we’re in conversation with the Boyle family,” chief executive Terina Keen told AFP. “Danny Boyle’s schedule is somewhat busy but they’re supportive of us as a charity.” “Slumdog Millionaire” won eight Oscars on Sunday. source: AFP |

He’s already a household name but Dev Patel refuses to think of himself as a big time actor. “I’m actually just a teenager, restless and goofy. Something like Hovis bread that you get in the UK; it’s white with all the goodnes s of brown…..” On a more serious note, Patel can’t help smiling at luck and where it seems to have taken him. “You know all these relatives used to ask my Mom, ‘what subjects is he taking in school?’ and she’d say, ‘acting’ and they were like …?? But now they are all so impressed.” Patel said that what impressed him the most about the slums had been the level of interaction between the people there. “I mean they have a life that is far removed from what I had ever imagined. They are busy doing something and there is an element of fun, everyone seems to know everyone else.” Patel said that he had been aware of Indian cinema and had also seen a few films. Of course the sterling performances in some of the more recent Hindi films proved how far Bollywood had come and how different it was now. “There are no stereotypes now,” said he. For Patel though whether he might want to act in an Indian film made and shot in India is a matter that he hasn’t yet considered. “Let’s say it all depends…” grinned the lanky actor. source: hindu.com |
