First “Airbender” Still Released
May 21

The first film still of Dev in The Last Airbender has been released today and was posted along with an article on USAToday.com.

For years, Noah Ringer went by the nickname “Avatar” because he looked so much like the lead in the Nickelodeon cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender. Now he gets to act like the character, too.

Ringer, 12, makes his feature-film debut opposite Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel in M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender, a live-action version of the show that opens July 2, 2010.

Ringer didn’t need to alter much to play Aang, who uses martial arts to manipulate the weather. Like Aang, Ringer keeps his head shaved and is an expert in martial arts. “It keeps me cool when I’m doing tae kwon do,” says Ringer, a Texas native with a black belt who landed the role after sending a homemade DVD of him practicing the sport. “It’s so cool to get the part.”

Patel, too, seems suited for the film, the first of a planned trilogy. He earned his black belt in tae kwon do before he turned to acting and discovered the television show while filming Millionaire. “I started watching it in my trailer in India,” says Patel, who plays the villain Zuko, a “firebender” (he manipulates flames). “I see why the fan base is so big. It’s got action but a lot of moral messages.”

Though they square off on the big screen, don’t expect any exhibition matches between the actors. Patel, seven years older and a foot taller, says it wouldn’t be close: “Noah would knock me flat on my back. “

Categories: News

It probably comes as no surprise to Twilighters everywhere that the movie’s stars, Robert Pattinsonand Kristen Stewart, made People’s annual 100 Most Beautiful List.

“I don’t get it,” Pattinson said about his newly minted status as a heartthrob. “It’s funny, you look the same for years, and no one ever mentions it. Then suddenly it’s a big deal.”

Pattinson and Stewart weren’t the only teen idols who made the list, which also includes Nick and Joe Jonas, Channing Tatum and “17 Again” star Zac Efron, who revealed his secret to staying beautiful: “Backpacking, hiking, surfing, swimming, playing tennis — things that get you active and are also fun.”

This year’s cover girl is cancer survivor Christina Applegate, and pop star Christina Aguilera heads up the “Beauty After Baby” category. Aguilera described how her son, Max, changed her for the better. “I’m a total vampire — but Max makes me go out into the sun or to the pool in the middle of the day. He brings out a different side of me that I’m really starting to enjoy.”

Starlets Frieda Pinto, Demi Lovato, Emma Roberts, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift also made the list. “It’s important to be comfortable with who you are and go natural once in a while,” Swift said about her style.

“Gossip Girl” star Taylor Momsen, who is also in the rock band the Pretty Reckless, found her way onto the list, but she doesn’t get why. “I have a really strange body,” she said. “I’m tall, but I’m all legs, like three-fourths of my body.”

Other Beautiful People of 2009 include Barack and Michelle Obama, Keke Palmer, Hugh Jackman, Angelina Jolie, Dev Patel, Tina Fey, Rashida Jones and the ladies of “90210.”

Dev’s film, The Last Airbender, has begun filming in Pennsylvania today.

[Cast and crew] plan to begin filming Shyamalan’s “The Last Airbender” in the Reading area beginning Thursday, weather permitting.

Most of the work for the Paramount picture this week will take place at the Pagoda on Mount Penn, following the company’s return Monday after 15 days in Greenland.

Production designers and special-effects crews have been working for several weeks to prepare the local site for the film, which is set in a series of mythical nations – Air, Water, Earth and Fire – and is based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series of the same name.

Shyamalan’s version will be live action, with a cast of mostly young, unknown actors – although Dev Patel, star of the Oscar-winning “Slumdog Millionaire,” has a pivotal role as Prince Zuko, prince of the Fire nation…

…The set will not be open to onlookers…

[Mayor Tom] McMahon added that there will also be filming in Ontelaunee Township and at the William Penn Memorial Fire Tower at a later time.

Hollywood Offers For Dev and Freida

LONDON/NEW YORK: ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ stars Freida Pinto and Dev Patel, who are riding high on the Oscar success of the film, have been roped in
to star in Woody Allen’s and M Night Shyamalan’s upcoming films respectively.

In an interview to US morning news programme Today, Pinto credited director Danny Boyle for landing a role in three-time Oscar winner Allen’s new venture. “Yes, it’s up in July. So thank you, Danny Boyle, for helping me take off,” she said.

Patel steps into a role that was originally meant for Hollywood actor Jesse McCartney. ‘‘Jesse had tour dates
that conflicted with a boot camp I hold for my films,’’ Shyamalan said. ‘‘Patel was one of the guys I was interested in. Then I saw ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, and the kid just grew in my eyes,’’ he said.
